Nike SB McRad dunk high skate shoe

Nike SB has joined the streetwear as well as cultural roundtables with a new February release. The “McRad” edition of the Dunk High Pro. Celebrating Black History Month through the lens of one of the better ’80s hardcore bands. Furthermore“McRad” features a black, white as well as green upper, accented with yellow and also red detailing throughout. Those unfamiliar with McRad may be interested to know that lead singer Chuck Treece (whose likeness is printed on the insole) was one of the first African-Americans to grace the cover of Thrasher Magazine. Expect the same premium materials, including the comfortable Zoom Air insole for superior protection, as standard on this release. Weaving together skateboarding, punk music as well as art, Nike SB’s “McRad” is one of the more notable Black History Month products in recent memory.

Treece spent much of the 90’s as an in demand session musician, playing drums with Bad Brains. As well as bass on that Billie Joel song “River of Dreams”. McRad reunited a few years back to release FDR. One of the rare reunion records that actually holds it’s own next to the band’s seminal work. Treece continues to skate actively at 48, and currently plays drums in the band Plastic Eaters. In honor of Black History Month, Nike recently created the McRad Dunk Hi Pro to celebrate one of the first African Americans to appear on the cover of Thrasher. While Nike’s labor practices continue to be pretty terrible  it’s always a good thing to see an icon as well as a true Original get the respect they deserve.– Words by Nathan Leigh
